Top 10 Self-Defense Weapons for Beginners

The ability to protect yourself and your family is one of the most important skills that you must have to survive be it when SHTF or any everyday life situation. Let’s face the facts. The world is a dangerous place, and the only way to make sure you’re always safe is to be able to protect yourself without having to rely on local authorities or anyone for the matter.

Now, when you don’t know much about self-defense and weapons in general, it’s not the perfect idea to go out and get any gun you can buy. To own a gun is a responsibility that you must be equipped with to make sure you don’t put anyone around you in danger. This means that you have to know how to use a gun.

This is the greatest obstacle for any beginner. To find the right weapon that your skill level will be able to use and effectively protect yourself and your loved ones. This is why you must absolutely know what weapons are perfect for beginners.

For example, an automatic weapon is too difficult to control and use under a real dangerous situation for someone who knows little. This is why, for the most part, its best to stay away from firearms. Still, there are exceptions to this rule and that is one of the things we’re going to explore in this top 10 self-defense weapons for a beginner.

For now, imagine that you hear a noise in the middle of the night. What do you do? The first thing you’re going to think about is how you’re going to defend not only yourself but the rest of your family. This is the moment you’re going to look for something to protect yourself.

If you don’t have any weapon with you, that’s going to be a problem. Obviously, you’re going to think about getting your phone and calling the police. You should totally do that, but what you do while the police don’t arrive? That’s why you must have a self-defense weapon.

Now that you know why you should have one, it’s time to decide which one is best suited for you. Depending on your personality, physical prowess, and taste you should be able to determine what the best option is.

Remember that having a weapon to protect yourself will make you safer and not the opposite. As long as you know how to use it, you’ll be fine. Since the weapons on our top 10 are, in its vast majority, are not firearms, the time that should take for you to learn how to use them is fairly quickly.

Still, from a gun to a stick, you should do your best to make sure that you control the weapon, so it isn’t taken away from you during a fight or you simply don’t hit anything.

To go straight to the point, below are the top 10 self-defense weapons for beginners. Click this link for self protection gear I personally recommend.

1. Revolvers

Revolvers are the easiest gun for a beginner to learn how to use it. They are reliable and do not take long for you to grasp every aspect necessary to be able to use them correctly.

Obviously, as a beginner’s weapon, there are its disadvantages such as the fact that they’re not automatic and that you take a while to reload them. Still, they’re fairly easy to learn how to aim and use.

The maintenance is another upside of this weapon, requiring nearly none. The reason that is also a great weapon for a beginner is that they’re cheap and perfect for domestic protection.

This is by a long shot the best self-defense firearm. The revolver ranges from .22 millimeter all the way to the 500 Magnum. Here you get a weapon that was made for self-defense since you need nearly zero training to learn how to fire it.

You can choose from a single action revolver that can be manually cocked. This one is better for close shots and if you’re fast. Or you can get a double action one that is more suited for self-defense since you get a little heavy and long trigger pull. The double action is bigger but more reliable for self-defense.

Anyway, the number one reason to get a revolver as a beginner is that apart from the fact that it is easier to learn how to use it, it’s also that it’s more dependable. This gun, when well maintained, doesn’t let you down. It works perfectly for years. All you have to do is clean it, which is quite simple, and make sure that is stored correctly.

Even though this weapon is easy to learn how to use it, you should get some lessons if you’ve never used one before. This ensures that you keep everyone safe and not put them in danger.

2. Knives

Knives are great for self-defense because the variety for you to choose is huge. The secret with knives is that you have to be in complete control of them while in a self-defense situation. When you achieve mastery of such a weapon, it’s like an extension of your arm.

You have so many options to choose from that you may feel a little overwhelmed. The best that you can do is pick something that you feel comfortable with. Another tip is that you can pick a knife that is discrete.

The point is that it shouldn’t feel heavy or too big for you. This is important because, as mentioned earlier, you must have full control of your weapon. The statement is true no matter the weapon you’re using but especially with knives. It’s too easy to make the wrong move and end up disarmed.

If you envision the knife as an extension of your body, you can practice some movements emulating punches, horizontal, and vertical moves. It’s important to remember that knives can be lethal, so you must be aware of your intentions when going for a hit.

You can go for tactical knives more military style or spy knives like lipstick knives and penknives. These are more discrete and are easy to carry inside a purse. Pick more resistant materials for the blade like steel and quality plastic for the handle. These sorts of detail may seem irrelevant right now, but they’re quite important when selecting your self-defense weapon of choice.

Since learning how to use a knife for self-defense isn’t the most difficult thing you’re going to learn, it’s still important to assimilate basic movements. Always remember that if you don’t control the weapon, it controls you.

So, choose the style of knife you want, be careful while selecting the material of the blade and the handle, and get familiar with self-defense movements that are important for you to learn.

3. Axes

An ax is a little more difficult to learn how to use than a knife. Obviously, it wouldn’t be on the list if it wasn’t easy for a beginner to learn it. Still, it’s slightly harder than the knife because it’s heavier and bigger.

If you believe that you don’t have to put much thought into picking the best ax, you’re not far from wrong, but it’s a good idea to take your time to learn something about it.

For example, like the katana sword, the ax leaves you exposed and vulnerable if you don’t handle it correctly. Still, it’s a good choice because it’s easy to use it. Just remember that when you attack your opponent and miss it, you leave you back unprotected and exposed if you go “all in” while holding the ax with two hands.

The advantages of an ax are that it’s a powerful weapon for self-defense and other uses. For example, you can get through nearly anything with an ax, so it’s always recommended to have one around the house.

You just have to be careful since one single hit of an ax can be lethal. This is why it’s important to take your time to get familiar with whatever weapon of choice yours is. You want to be fully aware of what you’re doing when you’re in a stressful situation.

Since axes are in their vast majority heavy weapons, they’re more recommended for people with a strong physique. The secret is to find the right spot to hold the weapon and keep the balance to ensure that you’re in control at all times.

Another great thing about axes is that they need very little maintenance. All you have to do is to make sure that it’s always sharp, which you won’t have to do all the time.

4. Baseball Bat

This is a classical home invasion weapon for those who don’t have guns. The baseball bat has its place in the self-defense department because it’s easy to use and to get one. Obviously, even though it is simple, you have to know how to use it. You don’t want to be the guy who hits only the air.

With the baseball bat, you get a variety of materials. The best one for self-defense is the one made of steel. They are reliable because they’ll rarely break and can cause the right amount of damage.

A good tip here is to use both hands to hold it with the bat being placed in front of your body. This helps you not waste time to get ready to use the weapon in a dangerous situation.

This is one of the weapons on the list that the impact of the hit will be determined by your strength. So, it’s important that you learn to use your weight to make the hits stronger. A great strategy is to use momentum and aim on the legs.

As you’re going to realize, any weapon can be lethal. It all depends on how you use it. In the case of the baseball bat, you would have to lose control to make it lethal. This means that it’s hard to perform a lethal action by accident, which makes it even better for beginners.

Just remember that since it’s still a baseball bat, you have to be careful in cases of home invasion. Always keep the bat in front of the body and try to get close enough to your target to be able to hit it.

You can pick a wood made or even hard plastic, but the best choice is the steel ones. This is one of the most affordable, easy to find, and easy to use weapons for beginners.

5. Stun Gun

The stun gun is a great self-defense weapon. It’s one of the first choices, especially for women. It’s easy to carry, to use, and it is effective. Stun guns are devices that work by disabling muscle control through a high-voltage shock. This weapon has two metal prongs that, when touching the aggressor’s skin, transfer the shock.

The main disadvantage of the stun gun is that you have to be really close to the aggressor since you need to touch them with the weapon. Still, it’s a great choice because of how easy it is to use it and because it’s effective. If you use it on someone, they’ll be paralyzed for a while.

In regards to how lethal it is, the stun gun isn’t considered lethal. Of course, there are rare exceptions to this. If you shock someone while they’re wet it can be lethal depending on the circumstances. Also, depending on every person’s physiology, the shock might cause a heart attack.

9 times out of 10, the stun gun will only cause temporary paralyzes. The great thing about this weapon is that there’s nothing else to learn besides activating it and touching the target. There’s nothing else to master here. It’s that easy to learn.

You can carry it in a purse or inside your jacket. The secret is to always have it in an easy-to-reach place so you can grab it fast. Another tip is to always aim for the neck, especially because this area is rarely covered with clothes. So, you can get direct contact with the aggressor’s skin.

About your options, you’ll find many. First, you’ll see that there are different voltages that you can choose from. Then, you can go with more traditional designs or the ones that are disguisable. Like the stun guns that emulate flashlights.

6. Taser

A taser works similarly to the stun gun, but it’s more versatile. Here, you have a weapon that allows you to hit the target 15 feet away from it. You don’t have to touch the aggressor or get extremely close to them. The taser shoots two probe metal darts that are connected to a wire that hits the target and releases a high-voltage shock.

The effectiveness of the taser is that it disrupts muscle control of the aggressor without the need of you having to be close to them. This can be a real advantage during an altercation, especially in dangerous situations.

The only downside of the taser when in comparison with the stun gun is that you have a learning curve. Even though it’s easy to learn, you have to learn how to aim and hit the target. Still, this weapon is great for beginners because it’s really that easy to master it.

The skills required to properly use the taser are the same as a firearm in the sense of aiming for the target. The advantage here is that it is non-lethal and that you can learn how to use it faster. You can really learn how to use it within an hour or so.

Another great thing about the taser is how portable it is. You can carry it within your jacket pocket or a purse. It’s easy to use and great for both women and men. The investment is a little bigger when in comparison with a pepper spray or some other options on the list.

Since the maintenance, the use, and the price are all easy and good, the taser is one of the best self-defense weapons for a beginner. It’s good even for more advanced users. The secret is to pick the one that works best for you.

7. Shotgun

The shotgun is like a classic when it comes to self-defense weapons. It is reliable and effective. Still, there are some problems with it such as the time that it takes to reload it. This gun is widely used in farms and by people who live in isolated areas.

Besides the time that it takes to reload, the shotgun doesn’t take too long to learn the basics of how to use it. You only need to learn how to reload and aim it.

Your options are not great when it comes to the shotgun, but it isn’t necessary anyway. Here you can vary a little with the size of the gun and the style. Whatever you choose, it won’t affect the efficiency of this weapon.

The weapon is not as good as a semiautomatic or automatic one, but for a beginner, it works perfectly. The only problem is that you have to do regular maintenance to make sure it doesn’t get rusty or simply doesn’t work when you need it.

Another great thing about the shotgun is that this sort of weapon, obviously, doesn’t require physical strength to determine its power like the baseball bat or ax. As long as you can carry its weight, you’ll be good to go.

Now, you have to remember that this is a lethal weapon and as such it not only requires a different kind of care but also some thought before using it. Of course, this depends on what kind of self-defense situation you find yourself in. This is why it’s a great idea to have more than one type of self-defense weapon. For example, you can opt both for a shotgun and a taser. Whatever your choice is, it’s good to keep in mind that you should go for the weapons that fit your profile and not just what looks cooler.

8. Pepper Spray

Even though pepper sprays are widely known as a woman’s self-defense weapon, this very efficient weapon can work for everyone. The great thing about it is that there’s no learning curve necessary to learn it. You can pretty much start using it immediately.

The pepper spray is non-lethal but still super effective. You can hit targets from up to 10 feet away. The best thing is that just because it is non-lethal it doesn’t mean that it’s harmless. You not only will cause a lot of pain that will stop the aggressor dead in their track, but it also makes them temporarily blind, giving you enough time to do something about the situation.

Those sprays are cheap, easy to use, efficient, and non-lethal. That’s why it’s a great choice for beginners that want a self-defense weapon for multiple occasions. You can get a few bottles of pepper spray to have at your disposable at all times. Besides, it’s super discrete to carry it.

Again, the pepper spray is easy to use, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t need to know the basics. First of all, you have to aim for the eyes. Second of all, it’s a good idea to test it before you actually have to use it. Just to make sure that you know how it works. Do it in an open space since the pepper can make your eyes and throat burn.

Your options here will be more in regards to brands. You can also choose different styles of containers but that it’s not at all relevant to the effectiveness of the spray. Just pick a reliable manufacturer and that’s all you need.

The pepper spray works in various situations, but it’s more suited for urban problems. It’s not as common to utilize it in home invasions situations for the matter.

9. Stun Baton

If you would love to get a crossover between the stun gun and a baseball bat, the stun baton is the one for you. You can use it as a stun gun in the sense of giving someone an electric shock. You can also use it to hit someone while you swing it.

Depending on the stun baton that you get, it can have a flashlight feature that temporarily blinds your aggressor. The features will be dependent on the model, but all of them will be able to stun and hit someone pretty hard.

The other great thing is that this weapon is easy to learn how to use it. It’s also way more efficient than a normal baseball bat. If you consider the versatility, it can be even better than a stun gun.

Here you can choose models with special additional features, or just the traditional ones. Either way, you get a solid self-defense weapon to protect your home.

The secret with all the weapons that involve electrical shock is to aim for the parts of the body where the skin is uncovered. This way your attack will be more efficient.

Opposite to the stun gun and the pepper spray, the stun baton fits better during home invasion situations instead of urban ones. You can, but it’s a little complicated to carry one of those batons around. Still, you have to remember that if you want to use it inside of your house as a baseball bat, you can’t be afraid of hitting things and even breaking them. If that’s your case, a taser may be a better option. The point is to always know your style before making a choice.

If you live anywhere in America, chances are that you have already held a baseball bat in your hands so the stun baton won’t be that different. You just have to learn about the voltage to make sure that you always know what you’re doing.

10. Real Brass Knuckles

The real brass knuckles are a classic of personal defense. Even though they end up being associated with street fights, you can make great use of them for your self-defense purposes. This weapon potentializes the power of your punch making it extra strong.

Obviously, you have to know how to punch if you’re going to use one of those. There is a right way to reduce your chances of hurting your knuckles and hands. After all, it wouldn’t make sense to use them and also get hurt as the target of your punches.

Most of the models of real brass knuckles are made of common metals, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t hard and durable.

The variety here isn’t great as with other weapons, but you get an interesting variation on the colors.

Since the most important thing with a self-defense weapon is its efficiency to protect you, that isn’t as relevant.

This weapon is cheap, easy to use, and reliable for hand-to-hand combats. It doesn’t require any learning curve as long as you already know how to punch.

It isn’t the best option if this is the only weapon you’re going to get, or if your goals are home security. Still, it can be an interesting and reliable choice to have in your selection. A lot of people even collect real brass knuckles.

Again, they are great for beginners because they are easy to use and cheap, but it shouldn’t be your only option. Especially for home security situations. In this case, have the real brass knuckles alongside another weapon of choice. You can pick one that has a far range such as the revolver or the taser. How Much Food To Store for Emergency Situations

I was thinking about how everybody tells you that you should be prepping like stockpiling food and storing water. Still, everyone tells you that you must have food for x amount of days or months, but no one tells you how to calculate this, or even what to consider when planning the whole thing.

It’s already been determined that you should be prepping a long time ago. Now, a big part of prepping is to stockpile food. After all, without food, you won’t survive long. Still, it’s not just about storing any food. That’s almost an art to it. You must have the right strategy to ensure that you won’t run out of food before the time you planned for.

So, how much food to store for an emergency? According to my research, you should determine the number of minimum daily calories per individual, multiply by the number of days, set a budget, and then execute. Now, it’s way more complex than that. This is why we’ll go into more detail below.

To be honest, you have to consider so many things that it can be overwhelming. A good rule of thumb is to start with the fact that men need 1800 calories per day minimum and women 1200. Now, since you don’t want to count calories, especially because this is not a diet, you can think about your eating habits.

You, better than anyone else, know the amount of food that you eat in a day. Take that into consideration when planning how much food you’re going to stockpile. Also, take into consideration that is always good to have extra food. You never know if you’re going to need more.

So, if you consider your pre-established eating habits, the caloric intake, and the fundamental nutrients you need, you’re good to get started. When we talk about basic nutrients is that you can get the minimum calories by eating a bunch of candy, but that’s obviously not the best strategy.

So, besides taking into consideration the amount of food you need per day per family member and multiplying by the number of days that you want to stockpile food for, you can include 1-2 fictional people so you have extra food. The point is that above all else you should have at least the minimum for everyone.

Before you think what’s the difference between this and hoarding food, remember that you have a strategy for emergencies. You’re not just buying a bunch of food that you don’t need and leaving the grocery store without anything left for other people. It’s very different.

Anyway, now that you know the very basic that you need to have food for an emergency, it’s time to go a little deeper into your strategy. If you can plan ahead, an emergency will never be a major problem like it is for everyone else who never preps and thinks that it’s weird that you have food and basic supplies for the same emergencies.

If you have the space, growing your own food should be an option. Click here for a plan that will help add to your stockpiled food.

Calories

The first thing to find out how much food you need is to understand caloric intake. As mentioned above, men, on average, need 1800 and women 1200 calories. Now, this is an average estimate that does not take into consideration your weight. Also, how much do you need for the kids, if you have any? For children, if they’re really young, it’s 1000 and then it goes up all the way to the aforementioned numbers.

You can find out how much calories a day you need by using a 5-step process that involves multiplying your weight by 4 other variables that are related to your gender and level of physical activity. This will give a pretty accurate number of calories that you’ll need.

Now, being realistic, most people don’t care much about calories. If you have a good notion of the amount of food that you eat on any given day, then you know how much you need to stockpile. Calories become important only when you are rationing food.

In this case, the minimum calories that you need a day, become a very important number to know. So, it’s maybe not as necessary for minor emergencies, but it’s always good to know how much your minimum caloric intake is.

Nutrients

Once you know everything there are about calories, you should worry about nutrients. These two are the least fun part of planning what food you are going to stockpile, but they’re important. Having the right nutrients for a healthy diet means you have fewer chances of getting sick, which is even more important during an emergency.

So, you should start worrying about proteins, fat, and carbs. Then, you can also worry about vitamins. Give priority to proteins and healthy fats. They’ll give you a lot of energy and help you maintain a healthy diet.

The energy part is the most important because during an emergency you don’t want to eat more than necessary. The protein found in meats, for instance, help you keep the satiation feeling.

Fats and carbs are also important because they also give you energy and help vital functions of your body to work correctly. Even though most people formed the belief that fats and carbs are bad, they are crucial to your diet. Especially during a crisis.

Now, about the vitamins, you should also include them on your plans. Let’s say that a natural disaster happens and you’re unable to go outside for a few weeks. You need vitamins from the sunlight, for example. So, you should have food that will provide you with the vitamin sources that you need. There is highly nutritional compact food powder that you can store and stockpile. Find out more about this “Superfood” here.

Days

With the number of calories and nutrients that you need, you have to consider how many days you’re prepping for. You already know the important information to survive for a day, now it’s time to decide if you want the food to last for 72 hours or 1 year.

This is a really important part of your stockpiling strategy because it affects everything else. You must know how many days you want to prep for. Now, the Department of Homeland and Security advises you to have food to last you for 72 hours.

You know that when the government tells you to have 72 hours of food, you should have even more. A good tip is to have for at least a month. If you have food for a month, you’ll be able to go through most of the natural disaster with a certain ease.

Now, if you really want to graduate as a master prepper, you should start with 3 months. This is the general threshold for everyone. When you have food for 90 days, you can be more certain that you can survive 99% of any possible scenario.

So, after you figure out you the number of calories and nutrients a day for every family member, you should decide on the number of days that you want to prep for.

Budget

Now things get a little more interesting than just talking about calories and nutrients. They are important, but let’s be honest, they’re not fun. So, your next step is to think about the budget. You probably have, at this point, the number of days that you want to prep for as we discussed above.

Unfortunately, you may want to prep for 1 year, but not be able to because you don’t have the budget. So, the next step is to figure out your budget. Even if you don’t have the budget for the number of days you consider ideal, you can start slowly and build up on top of it with time.

If you’re on a tight budget, a good tip is to buy in bulks and go to certain types of stores that sell items with huge discounts. The point is that if you have the right strategy, you can get all the food that you need. Just buy when the price is good and slowly create your stock.

Another thing is to make a list that separates the essential things from the less essential ones. This way, if you really can’t come up with more money, you make sure that you have everything that you really need.

Canned Food

Now, this is in every prepper’s strategy; canned food. You want to know how much food to have for an emergency, and you should start by buying canned food for that. It’s non-perishable, for the most part, and you get all nutrient groups that you need. You can get vegetables, meat, fish, and nuts. The possibilities are nearly limitless.

Canned foods are also perfect to buy in bulks and find huge discounts if you know where to look for them. Adding to that, there’s the fact that they’re really easy to store. You can pretty much pile them in any small room that you have in your house. This can be a time savior.

When it comes to canned food, you do lose the taste in comparison to freshly cooked meals, but you do get a reliable option for any kind of emergency. All you have to worry about is where to store all those cans.

You can calculate how many cans you’ll need a day. This way you can better prepare for how many cans you’ll need to buy. You can pretty much calculate one can a person a day. A lot of people will eat a little less than that, but at least you have a ballpark number that you’re guaranteed to not run out of.

Non-Perishable Food

Even though canned food is non-perishable, not every non-perishable food is canned. That’s why there’s another section just for all the other non-perishable foods. Especially if you’re on a budget, you can’t afford to constantly have to replace your stock. So, what you need to do is get non-perishable food so you won’t have to do that.

Again, use this as your main strategy. Leave food that is indeed perishable out of your list or just as something extra. Here, you have many options so go according to your tastes:

  • Dried food (it lasts up to a year but it’s so long that it got its place on the list)
  • Peanut butter
  • Grains
  • Pasta
  • Noodles
  • Nuts

The secret is to have some variations. You should still use the calories, nutrients, and days as a guideline here. With that information, take into consideration how much you know you eat. Get everyone’s perspective on this so you have a general idea.

Then, mix it up and go shopping. Again, a good tip is to have at least a month’s worth of food for emergencies. This number ensures that you have what’s necessary for any natural disaster or major incident that can happen.

How Many People to Feed

The next step is to get all the information you got so far and include the number of people that live in your household. Obviously, if you want to include people of your family that don’t live with you, you should take that into consideration as well.

Another thing to consider is the gender, the age, and the peculiarities of every person. As you saw above, gender and age are huge factors when it comes to the minimum calories someone needs a day. The peculiarities are related to allergies and the amount of food someone eats. This is not only about weight since a lot of people are skinny but eat way more than one would expect for their weight. So, remember to take these 3 factors into consideration

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Peculiarities (weight, eating habits, and allergies)

Once you do this, you get really close to the perfect number so you can prep right. Obviously, this whole section is not as crucial if you’re prepping only for yourself. Now, even if you are, you should take into consideration your eating habits and allergies. For example, you’re not going to buy canned nuts, if you’re allergic.

Good Samaritan?

The next step is to start prepping for the unpredictable. You have to think about beforehand if you’re going to basically feed those that didn’t prep. This includes all the way from relatives and neighbors to complete strangers. It’s important to consider this in your strategy because then you don’t need to decide about this later, and you are prepared for everything.

Maybe your cousin that lives two blocks away didn’t prep at all. Or maybe it was your neighbor whose son plays with your kid. Those things are important to consider.

Now, if you decide that no matter what you’re not going to share your food with anyone else that doesn’t live in your house, that’s more than okay, but it’s important that you consider it. This way, you already prepped for it.

With strangers, it may be a little easier to say no right away, but it’s important to think about. The point of this reflection is not to tell you that you should share, but just to make sure that you consider all this. You don’t want to find yourself wanting to help and not being able to.

Pets

One thing that most people forget when they talk about prepping is animals. You have to include them, especially in your water storage and food stockpiling strategies. After all, you don’t want your dog or cat to starve to death.

Now, on average, dogs need 25 to 30 calories per pound a day. Cats needs on average 250 to 300 calories a day. Obviously, if you have other kinds of pets, you should do your research for that.

Still, when we throw these calorie numbers, it sounds not very practical. So, an easier way, instead of counting calories, would be to calculate the amount of food you’re going to need to have based on how much food you already give the pets a day.

Once you have the amount of food you need to have per day and multiply by the number of days you want to prep for, it’s time to include in your strategy and more importantly, on your budget.

Room

So, you have the amount of food that you need to buy, you have a list of the food that you’re going to shop for, and you have the budget that you can come up with. It’s time to think where you’re going to store all this food. Don’t think about this after you’ve bought all the canned food, for example.

The best places in your house are places that only you have access since you don’t want every visitor to know that you’re a prepper. You also want places that have protection from sun exposure. This can spoil food faster.

Lastly, whatever room that you pick must have, obviously, the room to store all the food, water, and medicine that you’re going to acquire. So, make sure that you have a room in your house that checks all the necessary boxes.

Anyway, if you follow all these tips you should be able to have enough food for an emergency. More importantly, you’re going to have food for everyone. Now, to recap everything, consider calories, nutrients, eating habits, number of days, and everything else. To save on space you might want to consider a “Superfood” that has a long shelf-life and compact. Find more about it here.

Do Fireproof Bags Really Work: You Bet!

I was thinking about all the important things that you can lose during a fire. All the personal things that have sentimental value like photos, artwork, clothes, and many other things. Also, all the valuable things like cash, important documents, and things that you can either replace or is just too hard and expensive to restore.

With that in mind, fireproof bags are a great way to keep documents safe in case of fires, obviously, but also floods and other possible natural disasters in theory. Since the question that remains is that if they really do work. Then, even if you’re convinced that they do work in general, you should be certain that the one that you have will work when you need it. Imagine that you find out the hard way that it doesn’t. You lose important documents and maybe even cash because of one simple, minor mistake.

So, do fireproof bags really work? Yes, they do work. Now, there are a few things to consider before choosing the right one for you. After all, you don’t want to waste money and valuable things with a bag that promises to protect your things but doesn’t really in the end. One common mistake is also not taking into consideration what you’re going to put in the bag.

Anyway, the point is that you have to check a few things before buying one. With that in mind, below you can find every important section that you have to consider before getting yours.

Another important thing is to remember that fireproof bags will protect your documents only so far. You shouldn’t expect that all your house will come down and the documents will be there in perfect conditions. There are a temperature and time limit that the bag will be able to protect your things.

A good tip is to keep all the irreplaceable things in a vault outside of your house if you can. Obviously, it seems like the use of the fireproof bag would be for nothing if you did that, but that’s not the case at all. It’s just that the fireproof bag will only keep your documents safe so far until you take everything out of the house or building.

The main thing is that fireproof bags are a life savior. This is one more thing that you should have in your prepper arsenal. It’s right there alongside the faraday cage and your bug in and out strategies.

So, going straight to the point, the fireproof bag does work, but before you go out to get yours, take a few things into consideration. This way, you’re better equipped to make the right decision for your situation.

For example, did you know that you need different bags for paper and CDs, DVDs, and flash drives? Do you know why? Well, you can find out everything about it below. And for those who already know about fireproof document bags but want a list of top bags, click here.

Material

The first thing is to check out the material that the fireproof bag is made of. This is one of the most important things in your decision because you want a bag that works. So, you should check the material before buying.

Fiberglass is by far the best material that is used to make those bags. You should actually totally not buy a fireproof bag if it isn’t made of fiberglass. This material has a high resistance to fire in general. So, it’s reliable and efficient.

One more thing that you should look for in the material section is to get a fireproof bag that is coated with silicone. The silicone ensures that you don’t get an itchy sensation that fiberglass usually causes on the skin. This is really just to ensure that you don’t have any discomfort from handling the bag.

The silicone also helps the bag last longer, protecting the fiberglass from dust and things that are in the air. As long as you do buy a fireproof bag that has fiberglass coated with silicone you should be protected from the itchy sensation.

So, make sure that the bag is made of fiberglass and that the same is coated with silicone. This way you get a bag that really is fireproof and that is also not itchy on the skin. Just get one that has these two materials and in the worse scenario, you get a bag that works.

Internal Temperatures

The internal temperature is another crucial part that you should consider. This factor regards to how hot it gets inside of the bag. Depending on the temperature, the content can still be damaged or even destroyed. This is why you should check the internal temperature that gets inside.

Most bags will stay under 350 degrees Fahrenheit, but in some cases, you need bags that stay under even smaller figures than those. That’s why you have to take into consideration the content and the internal temperature information. If you can’t find in the package, you should be able to find it on the manufacturer’s website.

The internal temperature is also important because it influences how long the documents will last inside of the bag during the fire. This is obviously important since you may take a little longer to take other important things out of the house. Every item in this article is important but the internal temperature is one to watch out for because it varies from model to model.

To recap, most models you’re going to find have internal temperatures under the 350 degrees Fahrenheit, but some models can stay under 125 degrees. What you have to do is not only find out that information but also know about what you are going to keep inside of the bag. The last thing you want is to spend money on the wrong bag. If you do proper research on this, you should get a good quality bag that gets the job done for you.

External Temperatures

External temperatures are little trickier because you can’t possibly know what the temperature will be during a fire. You can get estimates, but it’s not the same thing. Also, that’s not the only thing to consider here. You should also think about how long the bag will be exposed, which we’ll talk about below.

Anyway, fires will get on average a temperature of 1550 degrees Fahrenheit, but again, these are estimates. The point is that you should check it out the temperature that the bag is capable of resisting. In the case of the fiberglass ones, you will get a bag made of a tough, resistant material.

A good tip is to also keep the bag in a place that would be somewhat protected during a fire. A place that wouldn’t be as exposed in the case of a fire. This way, you conserve the temperature longer. So, the bag and the documents would be able to last longer.

The secret is to put in a place that you can readily reach and, again, is somewhat protected. It doesn’t need to be a vault but as long as it is not just on a table, for instance.

So, check it out what the temperature that the bag is capable of resisting is, and get the one that fits your needs.

The Content of the Bag

Now, it’s time for what you’re trying to protect after all. The content of the fireproof bag determines directly what kind of bag that you’re going to need. For example, documents, paper in general, will require one internal temperature that is different from flash drives. That’s why what you’re going to put inside the bags are so important.

If you’re storing documents or any paper for the matter, the bag has to stay under 350 degrees inside. Check if the bag is able to stay under this temperature, and then you’re good to go. That’s your main concern when it comes to the content. Figure out if what you want to put inside is able to remain in perfect conditions in the advertised internal temperature. In the case of documents, most standards fiberglass bags will work for you.

Now, when you’re going to store any sort of media like CDs, DVDs, and flash drives, you’re going to need a bag that stays under 125 degrees during a fire. This sort of material is less resistant to high temperatures. Sometimes even if the plastic in the flash drive remains in perfect conditions, the digital files will get damaged and unusable, making you lose the possibility of even restoring the files.

So, determine the content that you’re going to store inside the bag before buying one. What you can do is also get more than one bag that fits both situations. Just to make sure that you have one for every scenario.

Can You Use It Again?

Believe it or not, some fireproof bags are reusable. This is another factor to consider when you’re thinking about what model to buy. Obviously, they’re going to be a factor when it comes to the price, but it’s worth the extra money if you have and wants to invest more. Now, you may be spending unnecessary money if you think that it’s not likely that you’re going to be involved in more than one fire accident in your life. Still, you never know.

Reusable bags are also interesting because your bag can protect your documents against other disasters, so you get to use the bag more than once without necessarily having to be involved in more than one accidental fire.

Again, the only downside of opting for a reusable bag is that it’s a little more expensive. You should make a list of pros and cons to decide what is best for you. If you think about it, usually, we don’t spend just a few more dollars and then end up spending way more having to buy another one.

So, take into consideration whether or not this feature is important to you. It’s not as important as the material and the content that you’re going to store in it, but it’s still quite important since it affects the price and the future need to have to replace the bag for another one.

How You’re Going to Use It

This sounds a lot like the content decision, but there’s a slight difference that it’s worth considering before buying your fireproof bag. Do you want to use the fireproof bag as a vault or just an emergency bag? The use that you want to give to it is important because if you want to use as a “vault” you should consider investing more.

Also, if you are going to use it as a kind of vault, you should consider looking for bags that have a master lock security. Some fireproof bags have a system that only the owner of the bag is able to open it. This is, obviously, an important feature to have. Especially if you are storing important, personal documents inside of the bag. Besides, you never know who’s going to find the bag in case of a disaster.

Now, if you’re going to use the fireproof bag just as an emergency, you may be able to invest a little less. As a bag to only be used for emergencies, you don’t need to worry about master lock security. Only about the resistance of the material and the size.

So, before buying one, consider the use you intend to give to the fireproof bag. If you don’t want to use it as a vault, you don’t need to invest the extra money with the security lock.

How Long Will It Be Exposed

On average, the fireproof bag should only stay up to 30 minutes under the 1550 degrees Fahrenheit conditions, but you can’t predict something like this. What you can do is consider if you to look for models that offer more resistance time or if those conditions are enough for you. This is another decision that will affect the price but may be worth for you.

Obviously, you can’t predict how long the bag will get exposed to the heat of the fire, but you can pick a bag that resists more or less time. Any bag that resists 30 minutes is already good enough, but if you can find a model that promises to resist even more time than that and you want to invest in it, it can be a good idea. Especially if you are storing important documents and your house is big.

So, for most cases, you’re good to go with bags that resist all the way up to 30 minutes. If you think that you need more than that, you have a few options. Now, it’s important to point out that the time that the bag will be able to protect your documents is also determined by the external temperature.

Waterproof

One thing that 99% of people don’t think about a fireproof bag before buying it, it’s whether or not the bag is waterproof as well. It sounds counterintuitive and just not right, but there are two reasons why that’s so.

First, while trying to cease the fire, people will use water to, at the very least, contain the fire. Second, your bag should also be able to protect your documents during floods. It’s very common to lose important documents during floods. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on a fireproof bag and lose your things in a flood.

A good fireproof bag that is also waterproof will come with double covering involving a Velcro and a zipper. This will be enough to protect your documents and digital media against water. Just make sure that both the zipper and the Velcro are of high quality.

So, besides having to worry about the material and the external and internal temperatures, it’s a good idea to consider a waterproof bag as well. This is important because it’s better to be safe than sorry. The price won’t increase too much if you add this one extra feature.

Size

Lastly, but not at all the least important, you have to think about the size of the bag that you’re going to buy. Obviously, this is going to interfere in the price and will be determined by the content that you need to protect inside of the bag. Unless you have just a few, small things, it’s good to get a good-sized bag because you’ll always have more room to store things.

Now, you obviously have to consider the things that you want to put inside of it. In the case of digital media like flash drives and CDs, you’ll usually need less space. So, for this case, you can get a bag with a smaller size.

If you want to protect a lot of documents in printed paper or even larger objects, you should definitely get a bag with a bigger size. The advantage of buying a large bag, in either case, is that if at some point if you need to store other things, you’re not limited by the size.

So, if you get a large size bag, you may not use all that space now, but it can be an interesting thing in the future if you need to store more documents. If you’re in doubt, get a medium-sized bag. As long you have space left to put more things in it. Now that you have become familiar with fireproof document bags, go to my top document bags I recommend here.

How to Prep For SHTF

If you’re beginner prepper and started reading on the subject recently, you may have noticed that a lot is talked about storing food and water, and how to protect your resources from the government or your neighbors. While all this is very important, there are a lot of things that are left out. The truth is that you’re not going to make it if you don’t have a strategy for SHTF (Sh@$t hits the fan).

So, if you’ve been looking for the perfect strategy, you just found it. Here you’re going to finally get the checklist to make sure you survive for as long as you want. So, how to prep for SHTF? According to expert survivalists, you’re going to need to apply basic survival knowledge. Simple is always better. You’re going to need the following:

  • Shelter
  • Water
  • Food
  • Equipment
  • People
  • Maybe a Plan B

This all may sound like a lot, but if you take your time and plan everything right, you’ll never need to worry anymore. You’ll know that no matter what happens in the world, you’re going to be alright.

Below, it is a detailed explanation of how to set everything up and why you need all these things in the first place.

Make an Essential’s list

When you’re going to prep for SHTF, it’s essential that you make a list of what you’re going to need. This list involves mostly resources and skills that you’re going to need when it happens but that you won’t be able to acquire afterward.

For example, all the tools, food, equipment, skills you’re going to need but you don’t have right now. Obviously, more often than not you’ll find yourself needing a lot, which can be overwhelming. Also, you have to make a budget since some stuff can be expensive and you don’t want to go broke and create your own catastrophe instead of surviving one.

So, think about first-aid skills that you might need. Some medical knowledge can save your life and many others. Basic stuff such as starting a fire and even hunting. These are skills that you’re going to need. Also, if things are really bad chances are that you’re going to need a gun. You don’t want to be the only imbecile who has no clue how to use a gun.

Learning those things can help you a lot. Mostly, focus on survival skills and first-aid. Then, it may help if you know how to pilot a helicopter or a boat. These are more difficult skills to acquire, but if you have the means, it might be a good idea. Even learning a language can help.

Once you have the skills jotted down, it is a great idea to make a sort of inventory to know the items that you don’t have. Guns, tools, equipment, and everything that you can think that would keep you alive. At this point, you don’t need to focus on water and food since they’ll be better explained below.

So, make your essential’s list and begin tackling every item in order of importance. After all, you don’t want to be the guy who never prepped and now depends on people’s goodwill to survive.

Bug In Bug Out

This is one of the most important things when prepping. You have to have a plan in case you need to leave your house and a plan in case you have to stay. The most detailed your plan gets, the more chances you’ll have.

So, come up with a plan in case you have to leave. It’s also important that other members of your family know about this place in case you get separated. This way everyone knows where to go to get reunited. Pick a place that is safe, perhaps on the mountains or in the woods, that has clean rivers and animals to hunt if you don’t have food.

If you can afford, you may even have two places to bug out. This is because different situations require different plans. The important thing is that you have at least one safe place to go if you need to. Also, whoever is with you must know about it just in case.

Now, in a lot of situations, it may not be safe to go outside. For example, a nuclear attack may be months before it’s safe to even leave the house. So, the best you can do is to have a plan to bug in.

This sounds easier than it actually is. Just think about it. If things are really bad, there’ll probably be people knocking on your door. Are you going to let them in? Are you going to share your 3 months’ worth of food supply with more people than you planned for? These are hard but important questions to think about it.

Especially if the answer is no, you need to know how you’re going to keep these people out. Just because you’re not going to answer or let them in, it doesn’t mean they won’t try to. You must have a plan to secure the entrances and make sure no one comes in unannounced and unwanted.

Besides that, you also have to know how you’re going to continue leaving in the house. You may be without electricity and gas for a while. You have to plan for these things as well. Your communication devices may not be working, so you have to prepare for those scenarios.

Have a Water Storage Plan

Water doesn’t expire. The only problem is that this is not entirely true. When you store water, it may, with time, develop microorganisms that will make the water unsafe to drink. Besides, you also have to have a water storage plan for the sole reason that without it, you die in 3 days. For those reasons, you have to have a water storage plan that works.

The first step here should be that you get containers that maintain the water clean for a long time. Another solution is to change the water every 3-6 months. You should also have some stock of bottled water, although this one actually expires. Still, they’re easier to carry in case you need to bug out. The secret is to have water stored for 3 months to 1 year, and that you have a mix of bottled water and water in containers. Here are some highly recommended water filtration gear.

You need water to survive, to cook, to clean yourself, and other basic survival necessities. For these reasons, you should treat it like gold. It may become even more valuable when SHTF. This is why you also have to do the maintenance of the water. For example, if you bought bottled water, drink it before it expires, and replace what you took. This way no matter when things go bad, you’ll have your water supply ready for you.

So, the best you can do is start with the principle that you need 1 gallon of water a day to drink and hygiene. Then you multiply by the number of people and the number of days.

Once you come up with a number, you store it in sterile containers and away from the Sun. This will make sure the water remains potable for longer. Then, you find a place to store all the gallons and create a plan to carry as much as you can if you need to bug out to another place.

Stockpile Food

You can survive up to 3 months if you don’t have food, but let’s be honest. No one wants to go 1 day without it. In a world, with so much abundance of food, no one wants to go days without eating. You can prevent that if you prep the right way. You have to stockpile food.

Now, it is simple to do this, but it still requires some thought. First, you’re going to make a list of foods that have long expiration dates such as canned food. They also have to have a lot of protein and some fat to give you energy. Then, you make a list and reserve some space to store it in your house.

With the list in your hands, it’s time to go shopping. A crucial tip, to do this the right way, is to not let the whole world know what you’re doing. After all, do you think your neighbor will want to go to the supermarket where everybody is when SHTF or try to steal it from you? It’s important to remember that people can be horrible. You don’t want to have all this trouble to have someone taking everything from you.

To make things easier and safer, you should buy things incrementally and not everything right away. Get some items every month until you have everything. Then, all you have to do is keep checking your supply to replace expired items or thing that you use.

Besides food, it may be a good idea to store seeds. You can not only create your own supply of food for the years to come, but they may also become extremely valuable depending on how bad things are.

So, to recap, make a list of all the food you’re going to need (ideally a minimum of 3 months). Buy things incrementally to not raise suspicions. It’s better if no one knows that you’re a prepper. Then, store some seed if you can. For a great alternative, you might consider a highly nutritious, compact, ‘SuperFood” that has a long shelf-life. Click here for more details.

Pick The Right Equipment

Your tools and your weapons will keep you safe from everyone else. The body needs the food, the water, and the shelter. Now, your safety depends on your tools and your weapons, so choose carefully.

First, you should think of the most basic stuff such as flashlights, lighters, knives, can openers, ropes, and everything that helps you to cook. You should also think about first-aid kits and medicine. These are the kind of things that you never think about, but you always end up needing them.

Then progress to more complex stuff such as weapons. You should have firearms but also machetes or axes. Big knives that open the ways into the wood are also fine. You have to make sure you have the right amount of ammo and that you maintain everything in perfect conditions.

Once you’re done checking your weapons, you may want to make sure your car is always working and have enough gas to travel long distances. If you can, having more than one car may be a good idea.

Here’s the thing when it comes to equipment. You have to get the necessary ones, and you have to do maintenance to make sure that everything works when you need the most.

If you’re bugging in, it might also be a good idea to have cameras and a full security system. This prevents unwelcomed people from getting in and gives you more security to control all the entrances. In case you live by yourself, this also allows you to be able to give a pass on forming a team.

So, make sure you select the right tools and that you do proper maintenance. This way you increase your safety, thus your chances of making it. This way you can protect your family and team if you have one. I have a few top recommended gear articles that will help you gather many of your survival gear needs. Click here for my recommendations.

Have A Team

Human-beings are social creatures, and as such, our chances at survival are increased by a large scale when we’re in a group. This is why you should consider having a team. Unless you’re married and have kids, you can pick every single person on your team.

You should consider the skills and character above everything else. You want people who know first-aid, perhaps even a nurse or a doctor, but you want someone you can trust. For example, a special forces guy may be quite useful, but you have to be able to trust him.

So, select people that can be on your team. If you find folks that are into prepping as well, you may even form your team before SHTF. Now, you may also have to do it afterward, which makes having a criterion even more important.

You should also consider mental toughness in your evaluation. People can get crazy in certain situations. You don’t want someone who would create a situation that could scale. Like someone who drinks too much and wants to fight everybody or someone that wouldn’t handle the pressure and try to shoot everyone.

The team, if you choose to have one, should also be aware of your hideout place. This way everyone can get to it in case the worst happens. Here are a few items that you may consider to evaluate people.

  • Survival skills
  • Character
  • General skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Cooperation to the group
  • General knowledge
  • Expert knowledge (someone who knows the woods or medicinal plants)

These are just a few guidelines that you can use to rate possible candidates. Remember, if you have the resources, you have the right to pick whomever you want. If you select the right team, you increase your chances of surviving and staying sane.

Have Different Plans for Different Situations

A hurricane is very different from a nuclear weapon attack. An EMP is also very different from an earthquake. You must have different strategies, different plans for different situations. The same way that you’d need different firepower to take down an army than you’d need to take down a drunk old man. Having a different plan for every situation is crucial for survival. Here’s the thing, a nuclear weapon may cause a situation in which it’s unsafe to leave your house. This would force you to stay in for a long time. You need to have everything inside your house to not risk contamination.

Now, when it comes to a hurricane, it may be better to leave your house. You can’t use the same plan for the same situations. It’s just not smart. So, how do you do? Pretty much every catastrophe would require you to make the decision between leaving the house or staying in. From that point, you have to decide if you have enough resources and if you have to carry them with you.

To make sure everything ends well, think about both situations and consider upfront, which strategy is better for every SHTF situation you can think about. Even zombie apocalypse.

So, come up with an exit strategy and the strategy of having to live in your house for even a full year without going outside. This is how you survive and make sure that everyone will be okay. For a great overall survival plan for you and your family, click here.

Final Thoughts

This is how you prep for SHTF situations. If you take your time to think about every step in this article, you’ll increase your chances of surviving. Don’t be the person who doesn’t take the right measurements to make it.

Learn about

  • storage of food and water
  • get your equipment and team right
  • make sure everything works well (including people)
  • and have strategies for every situation you can think about

Now, go ahead and make your list. Then execute. This is the best way to start prepping. Surviving is not a matter of luck but a matter of prepping. You decide which person you’re going to be when it happens.

Where to Find Water When SHTF!

Water is the most valuable resource on earth. From drinking to cleaning, even manufacturing, without water the world as we know it would cease to be. Emergency situations are the worst for survival as many people find themselves in urban settings, far away from naturally occurring water sources such as rivers or lakes.

Even if there are sources nearby, they tend to have contaminants. A good example can be the Hudson River found in New York City, as between the 1947-1977, many different companies would throw their toxic chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls or PBC’s that would cause mass mutation and death of fish population in the area.

While this period of dumping might have passed, there are still left-over components found in the sediment and general area of the Hudson River.

Knowing this, you can imagine that having a much better source of clean water can be incredibly important. If any SHTF scenario occurs finding water is among your highest priorities.  According to the World Health Organization, an individual in an area of above-average temperature needs to have at minimum about 2 gallons per day.

But in a crisis, one would need approximately 5 gallons to fulfill the basic requirements for food preparation and hygiene. For most localized disasters, it takes around 3 days for emergency teams to come to a crisis zone to help in the relief and assistance of survivors. Thus, everyone in your household needs between 6 and 15 gallons each to meet the most basic water needs.

It is especially possible to find yourself in a situation in which there may be water, but it is contaminated, for that you must be able to purify in some way or another.

So as soon as the immediate threat is resolved, begin to identify alternative ways of supplementing the food and water supplies. This can be the differences between life or death. Never wait for the supplies to dry up before identifying an alternative. Start looking as soon as possible.

What are The Most Possible “SHTF” Scenarios?

In the past 50 years, there has been a multitude of end of the world events, from 2012’s possibility of a solar flare to the Y2K computer bug, or the dangers of nukes during the 1950-1990’s Cold War.

Many people hoped for the best but prepared for the worst. Surprisingly, this, “End is Near” sentiment has not changed, but instead has become even more of a global phenomenon than before. But what will come next? Whatever the case, water will be a commodity, it might help to know what to prepare for.

Super Volcano

A supervolcano eruption might be one of the worst scenarios you will ever find yourself in, as everything will get worse and much, much darker. The supervolcano located in Yellow Stone National Park might be the largest one on Earth. If Yellowstone were to erupt, there would be 2,000 million tons of sulfur in the air.

The Earth would be covered with sulfuric aerosols in 2-3 weeks Most places would drop 10 degrees Celsius (50 Farehnhieght) and in the northern hemisphere there would be a drop of at least 12 Celsius (53. 6 Farehnhieght). This would mean most parts of the world would either be in below freezing temperatures or just above it.

Obviously, the repercussions of this situation would be disastrous for humans. The sun would be blocked out which would inhibit the growth of plant life, drive many types of animals to extinction and leave the world either partially or completely frozen.

Water would be incredibly important to have, as most of the water circulating the Earth during this time would become contaminated by sulfur, making it incredibly stinky, and would wreak havoc on electrical systems containing copper or silver as sulfuric water would tarnish them.  These effects could last for a long time, up to 10 years.

I would suggest stockpiling all the water you can handle, with upwards of 20,000 liters per person at your permanent place of living, if not see where you can have access to a cistern, well, or aquifer.

Super Virus/Bacteria Epidemic

Like any other worldwide epidemic from the world’s past; The Black Plague, The Spanish Flu, Chicken Pocks, etc… The world is hit hard, and fast. Most times people do not understand what is happening until it becomes too late, but those that are prepared usually tend to be better off. A virus takes over healthy cells, creating more copies of itself to spread the disease.

There is no way to acclimate yourself to a virus save for a vaccine, as it will introduce your T cells (the cells that fight against foreign cells) to the virus and be prepared to deal with a said virus in the future.

Bacterial infections tend to make their home wherever they can, and the human body usually becomes permanently affected. The only way to combat this is to take antibiotics.

If either way to combat these infections fails, you are stuck either surviving through it or dying. Which is why a superbug that reproduces quickly or is incredibly resilient to antibiotics is so dangerous.

If the mother of all epidemics occurred it would become waterborne before too long, meaning any open water source can be contaminated. The best way to combat this type of situation is to wait it out; having enough water stored away is ideal.

At least 10,000 liters to ensure enough for 6 months, per person. You might need to deal with little to no water for washing or cleaning as the chance of contamination is great. If possible be sure to stock up with UV light water cleaner, as it is amazingly effective against viruses and bacterias.

Electromagnetic Pulse

An electromagnetic pulse is a pulse of highly energized particles, usually seen as electrons. The amount of energy generated acts as an electrical surge to electrical systems. Almost like a centralized lightning bolt to anything that uses electricity. The only ways these particles can be generated are by man-made objects such as a nuke exploding in the upper atmosphere or naturally such as a solar flare hitting Earth.

Since everything on Earth (and orbiting it) is interconnected with some sort of electrical system, if an E.M.P were to ever reach a global scale, chaos would ensue. Everything from the main power grid to telecommunications would go down, manufacturing would stop slowly and services such as water or the internet would go down.

Looting would ensue and people around the world would begin to scavenge and kill to survive. Water will be one of the biggest, if not the most important commodities to have access to. Depending on where you are, be sure to stockpile at least 10,000 liters of water at a home base. Also be sure to have survival water straws that can clean water if necessary. Since there will be no replenishing your supply of iodine tablets, life straws, chlorine, or otherwise, your best bet will be to begin stockpiling natural filters and rain tarps.

The Most Common Place You Can Find Water in Your House

1.Your Toilet Tank

Yes, your toilet tank has drinkable water, but if you put a disinfectant agent in there you will not be able to drink no matter how much you may try to purify it.

However, if there is no disinfectant agent you can easily boil and strain the water through a coffee filter for an alternative source of water. Or you can use it for washing clothes or other objects with ease.

2. The Hot Water Heater

Your water heater is perfect for storing water. It is built to be perfectly insulated from the outside. The chance of bacteria or contamination is little to none. Keep in mind that there are other things to look out for,

3. Bathtubs

You might want to fill up your bathtub as quickly as you can, most bathtubs can fill with 40-120 liters of water at any given time. You might want to cover it with a plastic tarp to ensure nothing finds its way atop the water.

You can technically drink out of this without issue, although depending on the last time you cleaned your tub you might want to boil the water just in case.

4. Canned foods

Canned foods always come packaged with something you can drink. Canned fruit has its juice, canned soups are ready to drink and eat out of the can, even canned tuna comes with water.

Unless you can is pierced or past its expiration date, you should stay far away from it as no amount of filtering will allow you to eat or drink your food.

Whichever source you have available, you can use the following portable water filter that will clean up to 1000 gallons.

Places Outside of Your House Where You Can Find Water

There are other water sources that are available out in the wild. Although they may provide limited amounts, in a survival situation, it is better than the alternative.

1. Swimming Pools

Although pool water tends to have many chemicals in it, it can be rendered as either a safe source of drinking water or for hygienic uses.  The best way to make this water source drinkable is to use a high-quality water filter.

Highly recommended are the Berkey or Propur water filtration systems. These filters can be purchased online on popular retail websites like Amazon. If not, be sure to avoid any and all contact with this type of filtration system

2. Rivers/Streams

Rivers and streams usually originate from mountains, and as they are constantly moving water, which is perfect for freshwater fish such as Carp or Striped Bass. The water may not be entirely clean as River and Streams tend to be the place where animals dispose of their waste or where they clean themselves. With that in mind, be sure to boil any water you find from these water sources, as bacteria and viruses are numerous in moving freshwater.

3. Wells/Aquafers/Cisterns

The water found in these areas is not hygienic enough to drink without boiling; wells are open air, aquifers once exposed to air in any way can begin to have microbes, and cisterns tend to be stagnant water.

How to Purify Water

There are several ways of purifying water. While some are more effective than others, the only thing you might have to be careful of

1. You Can Boil It– Boiling water has been known since the dawn of time as the go-to for disinfecting any water that might be suspected to hold bacteria or viruses.

Although this method takes more time and resources, you need to build a fire, wait for the water to boil, etc. There is also an issue that in an emergency having a fire out in the woods or in the city might attract attention to you, which could cause many issues in the immediate future.

2. Add Chlorine Bleach to It– Chlorine Bleach is dangerous to drink, however it can be used to disinfect water if used sparingly. According to the EPA or the United States Environmental Protection Agency, “The mixture will produce a chlorine solution of approximately 500 milligrams per liter. To disinfect water, add one part of the chlorine solution to every 100 parts of water you are treating. This is about the same as adding 1 pint (16 ounces) of the chlorine solution to 12.5 gallons of water.”

3. Iodine Tablets– Iodine tablets act as a general disinfectant for all foreign contaminants, and they are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. These tablets are not as useful if the water has led or heavy metals, as there is no tangible way for this tablet to absorb or filter the metals found in the water.

4. UV Treatment– UV rays are perfect for killing all types of bacteria or viral contaminants within 5 minutes of use. The only drawback with this type of treatment is that there is no way for this type of disinfectant to absorb or take care of imbalances in the water such as chlorine or heavy metals.

How to Filter with Items Around the House

For those also wondering if storing water from your house’s filtration system, it is advised to avoid doing that. Water that is contaminated by natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods has extra particles that may clog your filtering system.

Trying to use the option of your home filtering system is not advised as they are designed to treat somewhat clean water.

Although you can still subsist off your house’s water, by making your own filter. Just make sure to either have these items on hand or know where to find them!

  • Craft knife
  • Hammer and nail
  • Coffee filter
  • Large cup or mug (Either one works)
  • Activated charcoal
  • Sand
  • Gravel
  • Container to catch the water

By cutting a plastic bottle about 2.54 centimeters from its base, poking a hole through the top of the bottle cap, and putting it atop of the container, you will have begun the making of your drip down filter. To complete the filter, you need to add the activated charcoal, fine sand second, coarse sand third, and finally gravel.

By allowing water to fall through the filter, you will be eliminating about 80% of foreign contaminants. You will need to boil the water for about 3 minutes to ensure that the bacteria and viruses are killed off.

Final Thoughts

So if a disaster should befall you and your loved ones, having multiple ways to find and have drinkable water is extremely valuable.  Best is, you now have time to search and locate all the viable options available and then to practice getting it.

Therefore, if you are missing some piece of equipment or tools to help you get to the water source, buying them right now and safely storing them for later use when and if the time comes, can potentially save the lives of you and your loved ones.  Click here to find out about one of the best portable filters you want to have on hand that can be used by the whole family that cleans up to 1000 gallons.

Are There Ways to Use Trees as a Filter for Water?

Yes, you can! According to a study done by the Massachusetts  Insitute of Technology, Pine trees are perfect filters; “Sapwood may offer a low-cost, small-scale alternative. The wood is comprised of xylem, porous tissue that conducts sap from a tree’s roots to its crown through a system of vessels and pores.

Each vessel wall is pockmarked with tiny pores called pit membranes, through which sap can essentially hopscotch, flowing from one vessel to another as it feeds structures along a tree’s length. The pores also limit cavitation, a process by which air bubbles can grow and spread in xylem, eventually killing a tree. The xylem’s tiny pores can trap bubbles, preventing them from spreading in the wood.”

A test was conducted and MIT and reported their finding of the effectiveness of the filter, “E. coli-contaminated water through the wood filter. When they examined the xylem under a fluorescent microscope, they saw that bacteria had accumulated around pit membranes in the first few millimeters of the wood. Counting the bacterial cells in the filtered water, the researchers found that the sapwood was able to filter out more than 99 percent of E. coli from water.”

Is Saltwater Drinkable?

No, salt water is not drinkable, since there is not enough water to mitigate the build-up of salt, your kidneys will try to rid itself of the excess salt and in the process will cause you to essential pee yourself to death.

There is however a portable filter that will filter salt out of seawater. It is both lightweight and compact. Though it is pricey, it may be worth your while. Click here to get it from Amazon.

The Best Place to Live in Case of Economic Collapse

Have you ever thought about the repercussions of an economic collapse? With the very increasing global debt, a total economic collapse doesn’t sound like a fantasy but just an inevitable near future. This is why this the most important not talked about subject when it comes to possible SHTF scenarios. People are just not really preparing for the possibility. You need a bug out strategy for this and maybe even more than that.

First, you have to secure resources and a vehicle to move from one place to another. Then, you need to assess the security of the road and the destination. Most preppers have a safe house to go in a bug out scenario. Still, depending on the situation, an economic collapse, for example, you may need to have to go to a completely different destination.

My research concluded that there are a few things that you need to consider when choosing the best place to live in case of economic collapse. This works both if you’re going to a different country or if you’re just going to a different city/state. Since most preppers would rather stay in the country and see what happens, even if the ship sinks, you’ll need to look for:

  • social stability
  • fewer enemies
  • economic freedom and opportunity
  • freedom of self-expression
  • self-sufficiency
  • cost of living
  • residency
  • language
  • prepper friendly

With this list, you can begin to sort out the best candidates for your final destination. Obviously, if you decide to stay in the country, the visa and residency do not need to be a concern. Now, if you do, you should also consider the language since some countries have virtually no ESL (English as a second language) speakers. There is an extensive guide you can use that will help you make the right choice and place to relocate. This book can be found on Amazon.

Social Stability

This is at the top because in the case of an economic collapse, or any SHTF situation really, you want to go to a place with minimum social stability. This is usually the number one reason someone would leave their house in the first place. It is important to find a place that has basic laws and security.

You can start by assessing the number of riots or chaotic situation that the place has both historically and currently. Also, the murder ratio is another important data that you should look at. Look for states that have laws that would facilitate your lifestyle.

Here the best criteria would be places that allow you to have a firearm, not too much populated, far from the borders, natural resources available. This is a good list of boxes to check when looking for the perfect place to live in case of economic collapse.

Choose carefully. When it comes to social stability since depending on what happens, everything may change. The truth is that in the case of an economic collapse, if it’s global is likely to have an impact on everyone, and if it’s mainly the U.S, everyone is still likely to feel. So, it may be a good idea to stay in the country no matter how bad things get.

Anyway, a good rule of thumb is to go to places that have a small population since big cities tend to have riots and chaos in situations like that. Also, look for places where you can have access to natural resources so you don’t need to depend on the government and companies to provide that for you.

Fewer Enemies

This is especially true if you’re going abroad. Choose a place that is friendlier towards Americans. This may be more difficult than you think. First, eliminate any country that has a bad relationship with the American government. Those places will not only be unpleasant to live in, but they may also be dangerous.

Then, you have third-world countries. Some of them have a high-numbers of kidnaps of foreigners. During an economic collapse, that will get even worse since everyone will be looking for ways to make money. Still, that it’s not the case with every single one of them so it might be worth considering.

Now, you’re still looking for social stability, which a lot of these countries don’t have. So, it may be a good option to look for shelter in allies from developed countries. This may be the best option if you must go abroad, but it still presents some hardships.

You have to find a place that you’re able to speak the language, get a visa, and probably own a gun. This task is proven rather difficult once you start doing your research. The truth is that you probably will have to compromise. If you don’t want to, under any circumstances, then it might be the case of staying in the U.S and head for the country.

Fewer enemies should also be considered even if you’re going to stay in the country. In the case of an economic collapse even your neighbor may be a threat. So, the most remote places are better. There’s less fight for resources.

Economic Freedom and Opportunity

This applies both for people that will leave the country and for those that will stay. During any sort of economic collapse, most jobs will disappear. People won’t spend money either because they don’t have it or because they’re afraid of being left with nothing.

So, it’s best to have a plan of what you’re going to do in this department. A good idea might be to learn a skill that is crucial, especially in situations like this. It may be easier to figure out if you think about it in terms of supply and demand. Think about the things that people will need during those times and how you can solve that problem. Great fortunes were made in moments of crisis.

You should make a list of possible destinations for you in this scenario. Once you have around 3-5 possible locations, you can start ruling out the ones that do not meet the criteria. This way, you can make sure that you have a surefire way to start all over and succeed.

To recap, economic freedom is important but to be practical, it is best to think about opportunities for you to make a living. Make a list of your skills and see what places are a good match.

As long as you abide by this rule, you won’t have problems to settle. For example, if you’re going to a different country, you should know how you’re going to make money and pretty much live there. Way too often people just think about what country they want to go to if they have to but don’t think about whether or not is a viable option when it comes to working opportunities.

Freedom of Self—Expression

I’m pretty sure that you’re a big fan of freedom of speech. Unfortunately, it’s not the case everywhere in the world. Especially for destinations abroad, freedom of speech is something important to do your research on. For example, in some countries, you can get arrest for complaining about the government. That’s something that we take for granted until we notice that not everyone has that.

Places with a strong democracy are usually the safest when it comes to freedom of speech. Maybe that’s another reason to stay in America. Now, even in American, freedom of speech may be an issue at times. The point is that if you’re starting over it matters. Especially in the long run.

Freedom ensures a strong democracy and that ensures that you will be safer than in other places. Places with not much freedom of speech also tend to have a tight government, which usually means more taxes, no gun permits, and all sorts of stuff that is bad for a prepper lifestyle.

A good criterion is to go to places that you can get freedom of speech, the whole country will do, and places that also are more isolated so no one will meddle in your business. Also, remember that in case of an economic collapse your money might lose value or you may even lose whatever it is that you have in the bank. This is a very extreme situation. Still, that’s why you prep.

Self-sufficiency

In SHTF situation, the whole point of prepping is to rely on yourself as much as possible. So, if you’re going abroad you should choose countries that have isolated economies and are also friendly to Americans. This combination is hard to find.

The reason to do this is that countries with more isolated economies will not feel the impact of a U.S economic collapse as much EU countries for instance. Still, you don’t want to go to a country and have to worry about being kidnapped or anything.  So, it’s better to check on how much they like or dislike America.

Now, if you’re staying in the country, congratulations. Anyway, you should choose places where you can be self-sufficient. For example, can you have access to natural sources of water? Can you hunt or fish? Do you have a way to make financial transactions even if the banks aren’t working anymore? Those are basic questions that you must consider.

Heading to the mid-west might be the best option, but again many people may think the same, so you must be careful. Still, I’d bet a lot of people would still try to stay on both coasts, so I believe you will be good to go.

Since you want to be self-sufficient, you should also consider gun permit laws and isolation. A good spot is usually one that you don’t need to see anyone if you don’t want to but you can see someone in 5-10 minutes by car if you have to.

Cost of Living

Obviously, the cost of living not only varies from place to place but it may change completely once the economic collapse takes place. If a place that has almost no one living there suddenly gets people from all sorts of places, the cost of living there might skyrocket. It’s just supply and demand.

Besides going to more isolated places, you should consider how likely people are to go there, once the collapse happens. For example, when something like this takes place, people will try to find common ground. They’ll go to cities of medium size or anything that is able to be more isolated than the big cities, but that it’s still a city. This is not only a coping mechanism but also the fact that most people learned to rely too much on the city life. This makes them vulnerable to situations like this one because they have no idea how to survive.

It’s like throwing a tiger raised in captivity in the jungle. It won’t survive long on its own. So, the cost of living should be a factor but you should also evaluate the chances of everyone heading toward the same place. If local business notice that there are suddenly a lot of people arriving, they’ll increase the prices of goods and rent. This all assuming we still have a currency unit.

If you avoid the obvious locations and the touristic ones as well, you avoid 90% of the places people are going to go. Remember, they’ll always try to find common ground and go somewhere familiar. Do it differently.

Residency

This, again, applies to both foreign countries and other places in the country. Before deciding where to go, you must be aware of visas and places to live if you are going abroad. A lot of places that would fit most of the criteria are actually expensive and difficult to get a visa. Especially on short notice.

When it comes to other states, you have to first decide if you’re buying or renting. Either way, you have to look for the availability of houses in the place. If you do have the money, it’s usually not a problem to find a place. During a crisis, you’re also more likely to get a better deal. People will be desperate to get money and leave.

Good properties give you options. This means that you can be both isolated and near other people. You can have space to plant but, perhaps, not so much land that you can’t protect and control everything. Now, make a list so you can rule out the first options that come to mind.

Once you do find a town and a house, the best thing is to set up everything you’re going to need. Equipment, food, water. Have everything always ready for you. This way, in whatever scenario that is presented to you, you have a plan to execute and be safe.

Honestly, the secret is to always be prepared, so you never panic or find yourself in a situation that you don’t have options to choose from. If you take the right measures and prep, you can actually relax even during those times.

Language

This is the most overlooked item when other preppers are talking about foreign places to go. Maybe because some people assume that everyone in the world knows some English or just pure ignorance. The point is that some countries speak better English than others, and if you don’t speak the local language, you should check that out first.

Imagine that you’re in a foreign place where people don’t understand English and you don’t understand them. How are you going to function in a place like that? That’s why you can’t be reckless and pick a country out of the blue.

If you must insist in going abroad, you should give preference for English-speaking countries and the ones that you either speak the local language or that have a high percentage of ESL (English as a second language) speakers.

Prepper friendly

Ultimately and, perhaps, the most important, you have to go to places that are prepper friendly. This means that they don’t have strict gun regulations in place and that you can also store water and stockpile food. If abroad, the government also has to be the least controlling possible.

Another thing that people tend to neglect is the fact that every country has their own laws. Obviously, the more Western a country is the more similar their laws are to the U.S. Still, there is always some difference that you should be aware of.

If you’re staying in the country, you should also check important laws in regards to guns, storage of resources and things of that nature since some of those may change from state to state.

Final Thoughts

So, this is the best way for you to pick a place to go when the economic collapse happens. Use these criteria as filters to help you find the best place for you. I believe that the conclusion is that the best thing is to go to more isolated areas of the country and not just abandon the sinking ship as many people think.

More often than not, going abroad would just be the worst decision you would make. It’s better to stay in the territory you know than take an adventure in the worse moment possible.
